As a friendly reminder to fellow U.S. expats living in Vietnam and elsewhere, residence outside of the United States does not exempt U.S. Citizens or even U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card-holders) from having to file U.S. Federal income tax returns. In other words, even if you live and work abroad, you are still generally obligated to file U.S. tax returns every year.
Failure to timely file your U.S. tax returns could result in penalties and could also prevent you from sponsoring a family member for a U.S. Green Card.
The 2019 tax filing season begins January 28, 2019, and the IRS filing deadline to submit 2018 tax returns is April 17, 2019. Certain expats may qualify for an automatic two-month extension.
