The U.S. Department of State (DOS) recently released the Visa Bulletin for August of 2018. The Visa Bulletin assists family-based and employment-based Green Card petitioners in determining the wait times for various visas to become available. There are wait times for certain visas to become available for use by foreign nationals because many visa categories have a limited amount of visas available for use every year and there are more visa applicants than available visas.

The following should be kept in mind:
- Applicants categorized as “Immediate Relatives” of U.S. Citizens do not have to wait for a family-based visa to become available; visas in this category are unlimited.
- Immediate Relatives of U.S. Citizens, like most immigrant visa applicants, first need to file and obtain approval on an immigrant petition with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) before they can apply for a visa.
- The Visa Bulletin dates are only estimates and can even retrogress (the date can move backwards from one month to the next), so it is advisable to apply for a visa as soon as it becomes available.
